Sharonda was born in Detroit, Michigan, and was the only child of Franklin and Voin White. Sharonda was born blind due to optic nerve hypoplasia, and her single mother raised her with the belief that blindness was just a characteristic and that she was limitless in her potential. This nurturing environment prepared her to live a rich and fulfilling life.
Sharonda grew up in Michigan and graduated high school with a 3.83 GPA. She learned braille throughout her school years and uses the skill to be an avid reader. Starting in elementary school, she took up choir and performing arts and has been singing ever since. Her singing career has allowed her to perform in concert halls, on television, in restaurants and churches, and even in Japan in 1984.
In 2000, Sharonda became a member of the National Federation of the Blind. Being a part of this organization has brought to her a rich tapestry of camaraderie and role models, who have helped to restore and upgrade her independence and confidence in herself. Absorbing this positive philosophy of blindness has also given her a desire to mentor others, helping them to find the same independence, confidence, and empowerment. She was an active member in Michigan, and remains active in Arizona since moving here in 2006.
In Arizona, Sharonda has served in various capacities, including Phoenix Chapter President (from 2008-2016), affiliate board member, and current affiliate Secretary.
Throughout her life, Sharonda has been employed in various areas related to blindness. These include roles as a technology instructor, Vocational Rehab counselor, and currently serving as the Recruitment and Student Relations Manager at Saavi Services for the Blind.
Other areas in which she has served include being a member of the Governor’s Council on Blindness and Visual Impairment (GCBVI) and a Board Member of VRATE.
For Sharonda, moving to Arizona was one of her greatest decisions. It has allowed her to accomplish much, including becoming a certified life coach in 2024! Along with cultivating so many rich friendships through work and service, another one of her greatest accomplishments was meeting her husband, Joe, who is the love of her life. They quickly became a dynamic duo in 2018! Many of Sharonda’s hobbies include listening and creating music, travel, cooking, going on cruises, reading, playing games, spending time with friends and family, as well as old-time radio.
In summary, Sharonda approaches life’s journey with enthusiasm, and unwavering passion. Though acquainted with the curve balls of living, she is strongly committed to succeed, while helping others do the same. She embraces life's adventures with a conquering spirit of positivity and resilience.
