RE: Improving Student Participation in
Non-Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind Activities
WHEREAS, The Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB) is charged with the mission of providing blind students with an education comparable to local school districts; and
WHEREAS, ASDB is charged with providing guardianship in place of parents of the students who reside in dormitories; and
WHEREAS, a large part of education of students is providing extracurricular activities that are age-appropriate to their sighted peers, including part-time jobs or educational or recreational opportunities in the community thus practicing the travel and independence skills being taught; and
WHEREAS, the National Federation of the Blind of Arizona and community based providers, such as the Southern Arizona Association for the Visually Impaired, have increased these educational, recreational, and social activities off the ASDB campus; and
WHEREAS, all parties recognize the needs of the School for the Blind to represent the interests of the student and parents while the student is not under direct supervision of ASDB staff: NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED by the National Federation of the Blind of Arizona in Convention assembled this fourteenth day of September, 2014, in the City of Tempe, Arizona, that this organization expand its efforts to work with the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind to create policies and procedures that promote confidence, independence, and self-reliance in the blind and low vision students.
