RE: Services for Deaf / Blind Persons
WHEREAS, there are an estimated 21,000 persons in Arizona with varying degrees of combined vision and hearing loss; and
WHEREAS, deaf/blind persons in Arizona need support service providers to assist in communication, information and environmental access when in the community for situations such as for conducting personal business; going to medical appointments and meetings; and shopping, etc.; and
WHEREAS, deaf/blind persons also require equipment to assist in gaining information such as access to computers, Braille electronic notetakers, and devices to augment hearing or vision; and
WHEREAS, no funding stream exists to provide support service providers and equipment to deaf/blind persons for non-VR individuals; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED by the National Federation of the Blind of Arizona this 9th day of September, 2007, in the City of Tempe, Arizona, that this organization initiates legislation to gain a state appropriation to fund support service providers and assistive technology to enable deaf/blind persons to live independent and fulfilling lives.
